Classification of Visual Art from the Perspective of Reality

The desire to communicate with the audience is the inspiration that drives every artist. Every form of art has a language of its own.

The artist wants to express his mind and share ideas, emotion and feelings through visual art.  It is his way of speaking to people.

Visual art is extremely powerful as a media, and it has become hugely popular over the years.

The language of art is no less engaging or powerful than spoken words.

Moreover, it comes with additional elements such as shape, texture, line and color. What could have been spoken is expressed through these elements of art. Visual art is a very broad term that captures a variety of art forms. From drawing and painting to photography, sculpting and film making — everything falls under this category.  The various classifications of visual arts and its types have been discussed in this post.

Types of visual arts

Visual art is primarily based on subjects derived from what we see around us. Artists have used different forms for expressing it, and that has given a name to that art form. That is why we see drawing, painting, sculpting, architecture, photography, digital art, film making and print making all included in it. Visual arts can be divided into three broad categories depending on how the subjects are represented. The three categories are:

Representational Art

This is the oldest form of art that is closest to reality. No matter which art form is used, subjects drawn from reality are represented in the way they actually exist.  Whether it is in painting or in sculpture, the way of representation remains the same. What we see in real life is recreated through art work. The subjects are easily unidentifiable, and the audience is able to connect with them comfortably. Representational art is by far the most popular form of visual art for this reason. Being the oldest and easiest to understand, the majority of artwork has been created in this category. During the course of evolution, a new art form emerged from it. It is popularly known as abstract art.

Abstract Art

Abstract art has its roots inside representational art as it uses subjects from reality. However, the form of expression and representation is different from what we actually see in real life. The subject is transformed by using the elements of the art form that is used. What we see seems to be linked to reality, but it is not quite recognizable. The subject is tweaked by the artist as he wants to project it in a non-traditional manner. This form started gaining popularity from the end of the 19th century. The urge to deviate from reality without denying it has given birth to this art form.

Non-Objective Art

This is a development that originates from abstract art, but it bears little resemblance to its parent. Unlike abstract art that revolves around subjects taken from reality, this form can be completely detached from it. This type of art is created only for the joy of aesthetics, and it does not want to convey any message. It is created only to appeal to the aesthetic senses of the viewers.

Society and people – what can we expect?

The future trends are shaping our society in many different ways, and people are expecting the great things from the future. But, in some ways, the things aren’t looking so bright. We have nearly exhausted our natural resource, and if we continue with this rate, scientists predict that human race will need to start looking for the next habitat. But, let’s explore the ratio between society, people and culture that surround us and what future holds for us.

Population growth

This is one of the pressing issues, the leading countries that which are contributing this growth are China and India, with the most significant number of residents. In the last hundred years, the Earth has become overpopulated, and we have cases of immigrant leaving their native countries because they can’t find a job and earn money for basic needs. On the other hand, there are countries like England and Japan where a population is aging, and the life expectancy is increasing. The baby boomers who are now starting their lives, finishing colleges and looking for employment are in a difficult position.

There is more diversity

The human race has become more liberal than ever.  We are not afraid to express our religion, race, disability and sexual orientation. For example, being a single parent isn’t a shame anymore, or expressing your belief over food. The people have become more emancipated, and they have learned to accept differences, which is a huge step forward. Maybe in the last couple of years, people have become cautious regarding Islam considering the recent events that have been shaking the world. Even though we accepted the differences, people don’t feel safe, and this will be the primary issue in the following years. Learning to accept the changes, but also to be safe will be the goal for the future generations.

Increasing inequalities

The gap between wealthy and poor people have become more increased in the recent years. The middle class doesn’t exist anymore. People are working more and earning less. There aren’t enough job positions for everyone, and many developing countries are struggling to produce good economy for their citizens. Also, poverty is a significant issue that is pressing many nations which are struggling with their population. They are trying to produce a right economic climate, but poverty is increasing as we speak and the biggest problem is that many children are staring all over the world.

Globalization and identity

As the technology grows people are losing their status, now everything has become public, and people have lost their way regarding privacy. The use of technology has enabled us many things, but in this process, we have lost our identity. People tend to represent the fake reality, by using different social networks, which allow them to be what they are not. Even though we are free to express our beliefs, we have become slaves to technology. In this case, we are required to find a balance, if we want to stay sane.

How is Technology Shaping our Society

We live in an era of digital revolution, people have become too dependent on technology, and the further progress is inevitable. We could say that before the invention of the Internet things went slowly, but now the technology is shaping our lives in more ways than ever. When we think back the first cellphones and computers, we need to admit that technology follows the society in every step and moves it toward the future. When you look at the recent news, Dubai introduced a first humanoid robot, who even got their citizenship. So, let’s look at what future holds for us.

Artificial Intelligence

In the future, we can expect the implementation of artificial intelligence in all spheres of our society. Even now many major companies are trying to develop and perfect this field, and they believe that AI will help them increase the use of technology even more. In the following years, the goal of big corporations would be to develop the machines which have the ability to think and make decisions. On the other hand, many people are afraid that machine will replace their place in the world and that number of work palaces will decrease because the human labor will not be needed.

Technology in Education and Work

Nowadays, students aren’t required to attend schools because they can take online classes and get a degree. This is a significant progress, and it saves a lot of time and effort. Not, you just choose a university course you want to attend and enroll in it. The same situation is in business, companies don’t require the physical presence of their workers, and they allow them the work from home. In this way, people can work from the convenience of their home, and companies can save money on space. That’s why freelancing has become so popular. In the future, we can expect a lot of workplaces like this, where physical presence won’t be needed.

Technology for Fun

In this area, the technology has made the most significant progress. You can’t imagine any man without having a smartphone or computer. They have become parts of our family. The use of internet has enabled many possibilities to humans. We now can communicate with people all over the word for free, share media content and meet new people, who are continents away. In this way, we need to admit that technology plays a critical role in our society. But, one the other hand, it also carries additional risks. People have lost the sense of privacy, and everything has become public. This type of situation gave hackers a lot of freedom and technology taught people how to be corrupt and abuse it.

We can often hear the cases of identity theft or fraud, which is a serious issue nowadays. People need to be aware of all risks and learn how to protect themselves.

They need to find a balance, and even though the technology can be a convenient thing, it can also be a great danger.
